She has been a Bush Artist Fellow and a McKnight Foundation Composer Fellow, she has been honored with the Boulanger Award of the Women’s Philharmonic in San Francisco, and has received grants and fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board, ASCAP, and the American Composers Forum. She has been commissioned by such organizations as the Minnesota Orchestra, The Guthrie Theater, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Women’s Philharmonic, the Minnesota Chorale, the Dale Warland Singers, the Plymouth Music Series, the Oregon Repertory Singers, Ensemble Capriccio, and Zeitgeist, and is profiled in the New Grove Dictionary of Music (2nd ed.), and International Who’s Who in Classical Music. Ms. Vandervelde recently concluded a three-year tenure as composer-in-residence with three Twin Cities organizations—the Minnesota Chorale, the Perpich Center for Arts Education, and the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF)—under a New Residencies grant from New York City’s Meet the Composer, Inc. During this time, she wrote several critically acclaimed works for young audiences, including COSMOS, an “all person’s guide to the orchestra and space adventure” with animation by Tom Schroeder (Minnesota Orchestra); Why Don’t My Eyes Refuse to See, an interdisciplinary exploration of the social costs of war, created in collaboration with WILPF and the students from the Perpich Center; and Adventures of the Black Dot, a choral adventure with story by Judy McGuire and staging by Kari Margolis (Minnesota Chorale). Her current projects include Birds of Oz, to be premiered by the Melbourne (Australia) Chamber Choir. As a conductor and pianist, Ms. Vandervelde has served on the faculties of the Lola and Rudy Perpich Minnesota Center for Arts Education and the University of Minnesota, and she serves on the boards of the Minnesota Composers Forum and Zeitgeist. Ms. Vandervelde holds a doctorate in composition (1985), from the University of Minnesota, where her teachers include Eric Stokes and Dominick Argento.
