Recordings: Internationally renowned as a composer, conductor, and arranger, Moses Hogan was in the direct line of Hall Johnson and Harry T. Burleigh, and as such, he was a leading force in promoting and preserving African-American music. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 13, 1957, Moses Hogan was a graduate of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA), and of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, in Ohio. He also studied at the Julliard School of Music in New York City, and at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Mr. Hogan’s many accomplishments as a concert pianist included winning first place in the prestigious 28th annual Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Competition in New York. He was Artist in Residence at Dillard University in New Orleans. Mr. Hogan began exploring the choral music idiom in 1980, with the organization of The New World Ensemble. Since 1993, he was the Artistic Director of the internationally acclaimed Moses Hogan Chorale and the Moses Hogan Singers. His ensembles electrified audiences in the finest and most prestigious concert halls at home and abroad, including the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. Much in demand as a conductor, arranger, and clinician, Mr. Hogan was commissioned to arrange and perform several compositions for the 1995 PBS Documentary The American Promise, whose soundtrack was released separately under the title Voices. His discography includes Give Me Jesus, an EMI Virgin Records recording of arrangements of spirituals for the acclaimed soprano Barbara Hendricks, on which she sings with the Moses Hogan Singers. He recorded and conducted several of his arrangements with the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir, called An American Heritage of Spirituals. He has two recordings of spirituals with countertenor Derek Lee Ragin. Moses Hogan’s contemporary settings of spirituals, original compositions and other works have been revered by audiences and praised by critics including the New York Times and Gramophone magazine. They have become staples in the repertoire of high school, college, church, community, and professional choirs worldwide.
